You typed “travel agent near me” into Google, and now you’re staring at a list of travel agencies and advisors. How do you know which one you should actually trust with your vacation?
Choosing a travel agent shouldn’t just come down to who happens to have an office closest to your house.
The right travel advisor should understand how you like to travel, have experience with the destinations you’re considering, and be able to help you sort through the overwhelming number of resorts, flights, room categories, transfers, and other details that go into planning a vacation.
I’m Brandie, owner of Travel with Brandie and a Certified Travel Associate based in the West Chester, Pennsylvania area. I specialize heavily in Caribbean and Mexico vacations, particularly all-inclusive resorts, honeymoons, milestone celebrations, and group travel.

1. What Destinations and Types of Travel Do You Specialize In?
Not every travel agent specializes in every destination, and that’s actually a good thing.
Think about it this way: if you’re planning a Caribbean honeymoon, would you rather work with someone who books a little bit of everything or someone who spends a significant amount of time researching, visiting, and booking Caribbean resorts?
Ask potential travel advisors what they book most often and where their expertise lies.

- Anniversary and milestone birthday trips
- Family vacations, including families traveling with teens
- Girlfriend getaways and group travel

Knowing the destination is important, but understanding the differences between the individual resorts is where an experienced travel advisor can really make a difference.
2. Have You Personally Visited the Destinations and Resorts You Recommend?
This is one of my favorite questions.
Online photos can make almost every resort look incredible. They don’t necessarily tell you that one resort has a huge property requiring a lot of walking, another has a very quiet atmosphere, or that the resort that looks perfect for your teenagers might not actually have enough to keep them entertained for a week.
I travel throughout Mexico and the Caribbean regularly and personally visit and tour resorts whenever possible.
When I’m there, I’m paying attention to the things my clients will eventually ask me about: the beach, food, pools, room locations, resort layout, activities, entertainment, service, atmosphere, and which types of travelers I would or wouldn’t recommend the property for.
That firsthand experience helps me go beyond what you’ll find in a resort description online.
3. How Will You Decide Which Resort Is Right for Me?
This may be the most important question you ask.
Finding a highly rated resort isn’t difficult.
Finding the right resort for you is different.
Two resorts can have similar star ratings and price points while delivering completely different vacations.
When I’m helping clients narrow down their options, I’m looking at things like:
- Overall resort vibe
- Beach quality
- Food and dining priorities
- Resort size and layout
- Pool atmosphere
- Activities and entertainment
- Nightlife
- Adults-only vs. family-friendly
- Kids’ and teen amenities
- Room categories and locations
- Swim-up rooms and private pools
- Distance from the airport
- Excursions and things to do nearby
- Accessibility and mobility considerations
- Budget
For example, the resort I’d recommend to honeymooners looking for privacy and a private pool may be completely different from the resort I’d recommend to an active family traveling with teenagers.
That’s why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter vacation recommendations.
4. Can You Handle My Flights, Transfers and Other Travel Details?
Your vacation involves much more than choosing a hotel.
Depending on the trip, you may also need flights, airport transportation, travel protection, excursions, cruise transportation, airport services, or other arrangements.
Ask what’s included in the planning process and what you’ll be responsible for arranging yourself.
For my clients, I can put together the major components of the trip so they aren’t piecing together their vacation across multiple websites.
And when I’m recommending an all-inclusive resort, I’m not just considering the resort price.
A property that’s 15 minutes from the airport creates a very different arrival experience than one requiring a two-hour transfer. A slightly more expensive package may include benefits you’d have to purchase separately elsewhere.
I want you to understand the overall value and experience, not simply which option has the lowest number at the bottom of the page.
5. What Happens If Something Goes Wrong With My Trip?
This is one of the biggest reasons people begin searching for a local travel agent after previously booking vacations themselves.
Travel doesn’t always go exactly according to plan.
Flights can be delayed or canceled. Weather happens. Resort issues come up. Plans change.
Before hiring a travel advisor, ask what type of assistance you can expect before and during your vacation.
You should also discuss travel protection and understand your options before making your decision. Depending on the coverage selected, travel protection may provide benefits related to situations such as trip cancellation or interruption, flight disruptions, baggage issues, and medical expenses while traveling internationally.
The goal isn’t to assume something will go wrong. It’s to make sure you’ve thought about what happens if it does.
6. Do You Charge a Travel Planning Fee?
Don’t be afraid to ask this question.
Some travel advisors charge professional planning or consultation fees, while others don’t. The amount and what it covers can vary significantly.
What matters is knowing upfront what you’re paying for and what level of service you’ll receive.
You’re not simply paying someone to type your vacation dates into the same website you could use yourself.
An experienced travel advisor is spending time researching destinations, comparing resorts and room categories, evaluating flights and transportation, answering questions, managing reservations, and helping prepare you for your trip.
Ask about the advisor’s process, fees, and what’s included before you begin working together.
7. Does My Travel Agent Actually Need to Be Near Me?
Not necessarily.
This is the interesting thing about searching “travel agent near me.”
Most of my work with clients can be handled by phone, email, and online, which means you don’t have to drive somewhere and sit across a desk from me every time we need to discuss your vacation.
But there can still be value in choosing someone local.
I’m based in the West Chester, PA area and understand the travel patterns of clients throughout Chester County and the Philadelphia suburbs.
I’m familiar with the airports my local clients typically consider, including Philadelphia International Airport, and when it might make sense to compare options from other regional airports.
More importantly, you’re working with an actual person and building a relationship with someone you can come back to for your next trip.
So when people search for a travel advisor near me, I think what many are really looking for is someone accessible, knowledgeable, responsive, and trustworthy.
That matters much more than whether your travel agent’s office is five minutes from your house.
